How do teams work in challenges?

Updated May 12, 2026 Employee

Some challenges in Vantage Fit include a team component, where you join forces with colleagues and compete against other teams. Team challenges add a social dimension to wellness — you're not just working out for yourself, you're contributing to your team's success.

How Teams Are Created

Teams can be created in two ways:

Captain-Created Teams

A team captain creates the team and invites colleagues to join:

  1. Open the challenge that supports teams.
  2. Tap Create Team.
  3. Set a team name.
  4. Upload a team image (optional).
  5. Add a team slogan (optional).
  6. Invite colleagues by searching for them by name.
  7. Tap Create.

Admin-Created Teams

Your HR admin can pre-create teams and assign members. In this case, you'll simply find yourself already on a team when the challenge starts — no action needed.

Joining a Team

If a captain invites you to their team, you'll receive an invitation. You can:

  • Accept — You join the team.
  • Reject — You decline the invitation.

Invitations can also expire if you don't respond within the time window, or the captain can withdraw an invitation before you respond.

Invitation Lifecycle

Status Meaning
Pending Invitation sent, awaiting your response
Joined You accepted and are on the team
Rejected You declined the invitation
Expired You didn't respond in time
Withdrawn The captain cancelled the invitation

How Team Scoring Works

This is important: team score = average of member scores, not the sum.

This means:

  • A team of 5 where everyone hits 80% scores higher than a team of 5 where 3 people hit 100% and 2 people do nothing.
  • Inactive team members hurt the team average. If someone on your team isn't participating, it drags the whole team's score down.
  • Every member's contribution matters equally.

Tip: Encourage all your teammates to stay active. A consistent team beats a team that relies on one or two superstars.

Team Size

The maximum team size is configurable per company. Your HR admin sets this limit based on the challenge format. Typical sizes range from 3-10 members.

Team Leaderboard

Teams have their own separate leaderboard within the challenge. You can switch between the Individual and Team leaderboard views using the toggle at the top of the leaderboard screen.

The team leaderboard shows:

  • Team name and image
  • Team average score
  • Number of members
  • Rank

Tips for Team Success

  • Stay in communication — Use your company's messaging tool to check in with teammates.
  • Motivate each other — A quick "great job" goes a long way.
  • Be consistent — Even small daily activity helps the team average.
  • Fill your team — More active members means a stronger average. Don't leave invitation slots unused.
