How do wellness leagues work for my organization?

Updated May 12, 2026 Admin

Wellness Leagues are a tier system that automatically places employees into Gold, Silver, or Bronze leagues based on their rolling average daily steps. Leagues create ongoing motivation through tier progression — employees can see their league status and are naturally driven to move up.

How Leagues Work

The Three Tiers

League What It Means
Gold Top tier — consistently high daily step average
Silver Mid tier — solid, regular activity
Bronze Entry tier — lower daily step average

Every employee with step data is automatically placed into a league. There is no opt-in — if Leagues are enabled, all employees see their tier.

Rolling Average Calculation

League placement is based on the employee's rolling average daily steps over a configurable window:

  1. The system calculates each employee's average daily steps over the rolling window.
  2. That average is compared against the configured step thresholds.
  3. The employee is placed in the tier that matches their average.

Daily Recalculation

Leagues are recalculated every day. This means:

  • An employee who increases their activity can move from Bronze to Silver or Silver to Gold within the rolling window period.
  • An employee who becomes less active will drop a tier.
  • The league always reflects recent, sustained behavior — not a single exceptional day.

Note: Because leagues recalculate daily, employees see real consequences for consistency. A single 20,000-step day does not guarantee Gold if the rest of the week is low. Consistent effort is what matters.

Configuration Options

Leagues are configured by your Vantage Fit account manager. The following settings can be customized for your company:

Rolling Window

Option Description
7-day rolling window League is based on the average of the last 7 days. More responsive to recent changes.
30-day rolling window League is based on the average of the last 30 days. More stable, rewards sustained effort.

Tip: A 7-day window creates more dynamic league movement (employees can see changes within a week). A 30-day window rewards long-term consistency and reduces noise from one-off good or bad weeks.

Step Thresholds Per Tier

You define the average daily step count required for each tier. For example:

Tier Threshold (example)
Gold 12,000+ average daily steps
Silver 7,000 - 11,999 average daily steps
Bronze Below 7,000 average daily steps

These thresholds are fully customizable. Set them based on your employee population's typical activity levels.

Tip: Review your Employee Report and step data before setting thresholds. If only 5% of employees currently average 12,000 steps, Gold will feel unattainable. Set thresholds so that roughly 15-20% are in Gold, 40-50% in Silver, and the rest in Bronze — this creates aspirational but achievable tiers.

Viewing League Data as an Admin

League Standings

  1. Go to ReportsLeague Report (if enabled).
  2. View all employees with their current league tier and rolling average steps.
  3. Sort by tier, department, or average steps.

Department Distribution

See how league tiers are distributed across departments:

  • Which departments have the most Gold employees?
  • Which departments are predominantly Bronze?
  • Are there departments with no Gold employees at all?

This helps you target wellness interventions where they are needed.

Trend Analysis

Track how league distribution changes over time:

  • Is the percentage of Gold employees growing month over month?
  • Are Bronze employees moving up to Silver after you launched a new challenge?
  • Is there seasonal variation (e.g., lower activity in winter)?

Exporting League Data

Click Export CSV on the League Report page to download:

  • Employee name, email, department.
  • Current league tier.
  • Rolling average daily steps.

Use this data for executive reporting, department-level analysis, or integration with your HRIS.

How Leagues Drive Engagement

Leagues create motivation through several mechanisms:

  • Status and pride. Employees want to see "Gold" next to their name. It is a visible badge of commitment.
  • Tier progression. Moving from Bronze to Silver (or Silver to Gold) gives employees a clear goal to work toward.
  • Loss aversion. Employees in Gold do not want to drop to Silver. This encourages consistent daily activity, not just bursts of effort.
  • Social comparison. Employees can see how they compare to colleagues, creating friendly competition.
  • No enrollment required. Unlike challenges that require joining, leagues are always running. They provide a baseline layer of engagement that does not depend on active challenge participation.

Enabling Leagues

Wellness Leagues are not a self-serve feature. Your Vantage Fit account manager has to activate this feature for you.

To get Leagues enabled:

  1. Contact your Vantage Fit account manager.
  2. Specify your preferred configuration:
    • Rolling window (7 or 30 days).
    • Step thresholds for Gold, Silver, and Bronze.
  3. Your account manager configures and activates Leagues for your company.
  4. Employees immediately see their league tier in the app.

Note: Leagues require at least a few days of step data before tiers are meaningful. For new companies, allow one full rolling window period (7 or 30 days) for tiers to stabilize.

Best Practices

  • Set realistic thresholds. Base your tier thresholds on actual employee data, not aspirational targets. Leagues only motivate when movement between tiers feels achievable.
  • Communicate when you launch. Announce Leagues to employees with an explanation of how they work, what the tiers mean, and how to check their status. Without context, employees may not understand or engage with the feature.
  • Pair Leagues with challenges. Leagues provide steady background motivation; challenges provide focused bursts. Together, they create layered engagement.
  • Review thresholds annually. As your employee base becomes more active over time, you may need to raise thresholds to keep Gold meaningful.
  • Use department data to target interventions. If one department is 80% Bronze, they may benefit from a department-specific challenge or walking group initiative.
  • Celebrate tier promotions. Consider recognizing employees who move to Gold in company communications. Public recognition amplifies the motivational effect.
