What tasks can I include in a Custom Challenge?

Updated May 19, 2026 Admin

A Custom Challenge in Vantage Fit can include any combination of 27 task types spanning movement, fitness, mind & body wellness, nutrition, vitals tracking, content consumption, and habit-building. This article lists every task type, what employees do to complete it, and when each is best used.

How Tasks Work

When you build a Custom Challenge, you add one or more tasks per theme or week. Each task has:

  • A type — what kind of activity it tracks (e.g. step count, yoga session, meal log).
  • A target — the amount required to complete the task (e.g. 10,000 steps, 30 minutes, 1 occurrence).
  • A point reward — how many points the employee earns on completion.
  • A schedule — daily, weekly, or one-time during the challenge period.

Some tasks are auto-tracked (Vantage Fit picks up the data from phone sensors or a connected wearable). Others require employees to manually log. A third category requires a specific event — uploading a file, watching a video, or reading content.

Task Types by Category

Movement & Fitness (Auto-Tracked)

Task What Employees Do Best Used For
Step Count Steps sync automatically from phone or wearable Foundational metric — works for everyone, with or without a wearable
Distance GPS workouts (run, walk, cycle) or wearable imports calculate distance Race / Marathon challenges; multi-sport competitions
Calorie Count Calories sync from workouts and activities Calorie-burn challenges, weight-management programs
Active Minutes Moderate-to-vigorous activity minutes from workouts Health-focused challenges (WHO recommends 150 min/week). Requires the Active Minutes feature flag to be enabled by your account manager

Workouts & Strength (Manual Log)

Task What Employees Do Best Used For
Strength Log Log strength exercises (bench press, squats, deadlifts, weight training) by reps or duration Muscle-building challenges; gym-going employees
Aerobics / HIIT Log an aerobics or HIIT session Group fitness challenges; cardio-focused programs
Yoga Log a yoga session (manual or via the 7-minute routine) Flexibility, stress reduction, mindfulness programs

Mind & Body Wellness

Task What Employees Do Best Used For
Meditation Log a meditation session (duration in minutes) Mental-health initiatives, stress management
Mindfulness Log a mindfulness or breathing practice — can be a single session or multiple short ones through the day Wellness challenges tied to anxiety reduction
Squat Tracker Use the in-app camera-based squat counter (real-time pose detection) Engagement-heavy strength challenges; visual feedback
Book Reading Log books read with time or pages Learning & development, knowledge-building

Nutrition & Hydration

Task What Employees Do Best Used For
Water Log Tap +/- to add 250ml at a time, or enter a custom amount Hydration awareness, simple daily habits (default target: 8 glasses/day)
Meal Log Log breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks via food search, manual entry, or a quick-add tray Nutrition awareness, calorie tracking

Health Tracking & Vitals

Sleep Tracker Log bedtime and wake time manually, or sync from Apple Watch / Fitbit Sleep-quality initiatives, circadian-rhythm awareness
Heart Rate Log resting heart rate (manual, camera finger sensor, or device-synced) Cardiovascular health awareness
Weight Log body weight (manual or smart-scale sync) Weight-management programs
Health Vitals (HRA) Complete a Health Risk Assessment questionnaire (one-time) Risk stratification, baseline profiling at program launch
Lab Report Upload Upload a PDF of a lab report; biomarkers are extracted automatically Annual-checkup verification, screening-program compliance

Mental & Emotional Health

Task What Employees Do Best Used For
Mood Log Rate mood on a 5-point scale and select a reason category (work, family, friends, exercise, food, travel, education, relationship, other) Mental-health awareness. Note: mood data is private to the employee — never shown to admins or on leaderboards

Content & Learning (Event-Based)

Task What Employees Do Best Used For
Video Workout Watch a workout video from the VFit library through to completion Guided fitness programs
Content Reading Read a health article from the VFit content library Health-awareness campaigns, education
Bite-Size Content Watch or read short-form wellness content (micro-lessons, tips, infographics) Micro-learning, daily wellness tips

Habits & Specialized

Task What Employees Do Best Used For
Smoking Cessation Log Daily check-in (smoke-free day or status) Smoking-cessation programs
Custom Loggable Activity Log a company-branded activity you've created (e.g. "Office Yoga", "Walking Meeting") Workplace-specific initiatives — create custom activities at Configuration → Activities
Adherence (Custom Habit) Daily check-in for a custom habit (e.g. "Took Vitamins", "Avoided Sugar") Daily habit-building, medication adherence — create at Configuration → Activities
Doctor Visit Log completion of an annual checkup or medical appointment Preventive care, compliance tracking
Manual Steps Enter a daily step count manually (if enabled for your company) Fallback when device sync fails; helpful for wearable-optional companies

Mode Constraints

Plan Available Task Types
Lite Mode Step Count only
Full Mode All 27 task types

If your account is on Lite Mode, you can run step-based challenges only. Talk to your account manager about upgrading if you need access to other task types.

Auto-Tracked vs Manual Log vs Event-Based

Behaviour Examples What This Means
Auto-tracked Step Count, Distance, Calorie Count, Active Minutes Employees don't need to do anything beyond carrying their phone (or wearing a synced device)
Manual log Most of the others — yoga, meditation, water, meals, weight, sleep, mood, smoking, custom activities Employees actively tap a button or fill a form to record
Event-based Video Workout, Content Reading, Bite-Size Content, Lab Report Upload, Health Vitals Requires a specific in-app event (watching the video, reading the article, uploading the file). Cannot be self-logged

This matters for adoption — auto-tracked tasks have very high completion rates because they require no friction. Manual-log tasks require employee remembering and engagement. Mix accordingly based on your audience.

Custom Activities (Configuring Your Own)

Beyond the 27 built-in types, you can create company-branded activities and habits at Configuration → Activities:

  • Custom loggable activities appear in the employee's Log Activity menu. Use these for branded initiatives like "Walking Meeting" or "Office Stretch Break".
  • Adherence activities appear in the Plus menu under "More" and are tracked daily, independent of any active challenge. Use these for long-running habit-building like "Took Vitamins" or "Avoided Sugar".

When to Use Which Mix

Goal Recommended Mix
Maximum participation Step Count + Water Log + a content task (low-friction, daily)
Holistic wellness program 1 movement task + 1 mind-body (yoga/meditation) + 1 nutrition (water/meal log) + 1 content read
Health-screening campaign Lab Report Upload + Health Vitals (HRA) + Doctor Visit
New-hire onboarding wellness Step Count + Content Reading (orientation videos) + custom Adherence activities
Quick-deploy event Step Count or Distance only — minimal setup, broad reach
