How Do I Fix Battery Optimization Issues on Android?

Updated May 12, 2026 Employee

If your steps only update when you open the Vantage Fit app, your Android phone may be limiting background activity to save battery. The fix usually takes about two minutes.

Why This Happens

Android phones use battery settings to extend battery life. Some manufacturers — including Samsung, Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus, Vivo, and others — add extra battery controls. If Vantage Fit is restricted, step updates may be delayed while the app is closed.

Your steps are never lost. They stay in your Android step source or wearable app. Vantage Fit needs permission to run briefly in the background so it can update them.

Tip: Even if your steps look delayed, opening the app always triggers an immediate sync. The settings below let syncing happen automatically without you having to open the app.

Samsung (Galaxy S, A, Note, Z Series)

Samsung has two layers of battery management. You need to adjust both.

Step 1: Set Vantage Fit to Unrestricted

  1. Open Settings
  2. Tap Apps
  3. Find and tap Vantage Fit
  4. Tap Battery
  5. Select "Unrestricted"

Step 2: Remove from sleeping and deep sleeping apps

  1. Open SettingsBattery (or Battery and device careBattery)
  2. Tap Background usage limits
  3. Check the Sleeping apps list — if Vantage Fit is there, remove it
  4. Check the Deep sleeping apps list — if Vantage Fit is there, remove it

Note: Samsung may put apps into "deep sleep" after a few days of inactivity. If you take a break from using Vantage Fit and come back, you may need to check this setting again.

Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO (MIUI / HyperOS)

Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO phones may have more than one battery setting to adjust.

Step 1: Set battery saver to No restrictions

  1. Open SettingsAppsManage apps
  2. Find and tap Vantage Fit
  3. Tap Battery saver
  4. Select "No restrictions"

Step 2: Disable battery optimization system-wide for VFit

  1. Open SettingsBattery & performance (or just Battery)
  2. Tap App battery saver
  3. Find Vantage Fit
  4. Select "No restrictions"

Step 3: Enable Autostart

  1. Open the Security app (pre-installed on all Xiaomi/Redmi phones)
  2. Tap PermissionsAutostart
  3. Find Vantage Fit and toggle it ON

Tip: On some MIUI versions, you can also "lock" Vantage Fit in the recent apps tray. Open the multitask view, find the Vantage Fit card, and swipe down on it (or tap the lock icon). This helps Vantage Fit keep updating after you clear recent apps.

Huawei and Honor (EMUI / HarmonyOS)

Huawei's battery management uses an "App launch" system that controls three separate permissions.

  1. Open SettingsBattery
  2. Tap App launch (or Launch)
  3. Find Vantage Fit
  4. Toggle OFF the "Manage automatically" switch — this opens a manual management dialog
  5. Enable all three toggles:
    • Auto-launch: ON
    • Secondary launch: ON
    • Run in background: ON
  6. Tap OK to save

Note: "Auto-launch" lets the app start after a phone reboot. "Secondary launch" lets other apps trigger it. "Run in background" lets it stay active. You need all three for reliable syncing.

OnePlus, Oppo, and Realme (ColorOS / OxygenOS)

These three brands share the same base operating system (ColorOS), so the steps are similar.

Step 1: Disable battery optimization

  1. Open SettingsBattery (or Battery → Battery optimization)
  2. Find Vantage Fit
  3. Select "Don't optimize"

Step 2: Allow through Special app access

  1. Open SettingsAppsSpecial app access
  2. Tap Battery optimization
  3. Find Vantage Fit and set it to "Not optimized" (or "Don't optimize")

Tip: On Realme and Oppo devices, you may also find an "Auto Startup" option under Settings → App Management → Vantage Fit. Enable it if available.

Vivo (Funtouch OS / Origin OS)

  1. Open SettingsBattery
  2. Tap Background power consumption management (or High background power consumption)
  3. Find Vantage Fit
  4. Toggle it ON (this allows background power consumption)

Note: On some Vivo models, this setting is labeled slightly differently. Look for any option that controls which apps are allowed to run in the background.

Google Pixel and Stock Android (Motorola, Nokia, etc.)

Stock Android has the simplest battery settings.

  1. Open SettingsApps
  2. Find and tap Vantage Fit
  3. Tap Battery
  4. Select "Unrestricted"

That is it. Stock Android does not have the extra layers of battery management that Samsung, Xiaomi, and other manufacturers add.

After Making Changes

Once you have updated your battery settings:

  1. Open Vantage Fit to trigger an immediate sync
  2. Close the app and go about your day normally
  3. Check back after a few hours — your steps should now be updating without you having to open the app

If steps still are not syncing in the background after making these changes:

  • Restart your phone — some battery settings only take effect after a reboot
  • Open Vantage Fit once after the restart to re-initialize background syncing
  • Wait 24 hours — Android may need a full cycle to reschedule the sync job

Tip: Major Android OS updates can sometimes reset battery optimization settings to their defaults. If background sync stops working after a phone update, revisit the steps above for your phone brand.

Quick Reference Table

Phone Brand Key Setting Where to Find It
Samsung Unrestricted + remove from sleeping apps Settings → Apps → VFit → Battery / Settings → Battery → Background usage limits
Xiaomi/Redmi No restrictions + Autostart Settings → Apps → VFit → Battery saver / Security → Autostart
Huawei/Honor Manual launch (3 toggles ON) Settings → Battery → App launch
OnePlus/Oppo/Realme Don't optimize Settings → Battery → Battery optimization
Vivo Background power ON Settings → Battery → Background power consumption
