What Does Health Connect Do on Android?

Updated May 12, 2026 Employee

Health Connect is Android's health data hub. Vantage Fit uses it for supported health data like workouts, sleep, and heart rate.

For steps, Vantage Fit uses Google Fit on Android unless you connect Fitbit or Garmin.

What is Health Connect?

Health Connect is built into many modern Android phones and is also available from the Google Play Store on supported versions. It lets apps share supported health data with your permission.

How to Connect Health Connect

  1. Open Vantage Fit and go to Settings
  1. Tap "Devices & Connections"
  1. Tap "Health Connect" → then "Connect"
  1. Android permission dialog appears — Health Connect asks you to grant Vantage Fit access to specific data types such as workouts, sleep, heart rate, or weight
  1. Grant access — tap "Allow" for the categories you want to share

  2. Sync begins — Vantage Fit reads your available health data from Health Connect. Steps and activities appear on summary page.

How Android Syncing Works

When What Happens
When you open the app Immediate step sync from the connected Android step source
Automatic update Android can update in the background when battery settings allow it
Manual sync Tap Sync from the Plus (+) menu

Note: Open Vantage Fit when you want the latest step total to appear immediately. If updates seem delayed, check your Android battery settings. See Does Vantage Fit Sync When the App is Closed? for details.

If You Denied Permission

If you accidentally denied Health Connect access for workouts, sleep, or heart rate:

  1. Open your phone's Settings app
  2. Navigate to Health Connect (or search for it)
  3. Tap App permissions
  4. Find Vantage Fit and grant the required data access

What Data is Synced

Data Type Direction Details
Steps Google Fit, Fitbit, or Garmin Daily total + hourly breakdown where available
Workouts Health Connect, when available Duration, type, calories burned
Sleep Health Connect, when permission is granted Sleep data
Heart Rate Health Connect, when permission is granted Heart rate data
Weight / other health data Depends on the feature and permission granted Supported health data

Health Connect and Wearables

If you use a wearable that shares workouts, sleep, or heart rate with Health Connect, Vantage Fit may be able to import that data after you grant permission.

For steps, use the device connection options in Vantage Fit.
