It's common to see a slightly different step count in Vantage Fit compared to your fitness tracker, Apple Health, or Android fitness app. There are a few normal reasons why the numbers can differ.
Reason 1: Not All Step Sources Are Supported
Vantage Fit counts steps from supported apps and devices.
How it works:
- Vantage Fit supports common phone health apps and connected devices.
- Steps from unsupported apps may not appear in Vantage Fit.
- This helps keep challenge results consistent for everyone.
Note: Supported source checks help keep challenge results fair and consistent.
Reason 2: Sync Timing Differences
Your fitness device shows steps in real-time as you walk. Vantage Fit syncs periodically:
| Platform | Sync Frequency |
|---|---|
| iPhone | Automatic updates through Apple Health + when you open the app |
| Android | When you open the app + automatic updates when battery settings allow it |
| Fitbit | When you open the app |
| Garmin | Automatic updates after Garmin Connect syncs |
If you check your device and Vantage Fit at the same moment, your device may be ahead because Vantage Fit hasn't synced yet. Just open the app to trigger an immediate sync.
Reason 3: Different Counting Methods
Your phone and your wearable count steps differently:
- Phone sensors detect steps based on pocket or bag movement — can miss steps when the phone is on a desk
- Wrist-based sensors (Apple Watch, Fitbit, Garmin) detect wrist movement — can occasionally count arm gestures as steps
- Each device's algorithm processes raw sensor data differently — step detection thresholds vary
It's normal for a phone to count fewer steps than a wrist-worn tracker, or vice versa.
Reason 4: Device Priority (Fitbit/Garmin Override)
When Fitbit or Garmin is connected, Vantage Fit uses that device for step data. It does not add Apple Health or Google Fit steps on top.
| Connected Device | Step Source |
|---|---|
| Fitbit connected | Steps from Fitbit only — Apple Health/Google Fit ignored |
| Garmin connected | Steps from Garmin only — Apple Health/Google Fit ignored |
| No Fitbit or Garmin | Steps from Apple Health on iPhone or Google Fit on Android |
If your Fitbit shows 8,000 steps and Apple Health shows 8,500, Vantage Fit will show the Fitbit number (not the Apple Health number) because Fitbit is the connected device.
Reason 5: Garmin Daily Totals
If you're connected to Garmin, Vantage Fit receives daily step totals only — no hourly breakdown. If you add up the hourly values shown in Vantage Fit's step chart, they won't match the daily total because hourly data isn't available from Garmin.
What to Do
- Sync manually — open the app or tap Plus (+) → Sync
- Check your connected device — go to Settings → Device Management to confirm which device is active
- Compare at end of day — step counts converge as the day progresses and syncs catch up
- Small differences are normal — a gap of a few hundred steps between devices is expected due to different counting algorithms
Tip: If you're seeing a large discrepancy (thousands of steps), the most common cause is having the wrong device connected, or your wearable not syncing to its companion app. Check your device connection first.
When to Be Concerned
A small difference (a few hundred steps) between devices is normal. Contact your HR admin if:
- Your Vantage Fit step count is consistently zero despite being active.
- The difference is very large (e.g., device shows 10,000 steps, Vantage Fit shows 2,000).
- Steps were counting fine before but suddenly stopped (may be a sync issue — see device-specific troubleshooting articles).
